When Should You Call an Emergency Electrician?
Not every electrical glitch needs an emergency call — but waiting on the wrong one can turn a repair into a fire claim. Here's how to tell the difference.
Call Immediately — These Are Emergencies
Burning smell or smoke from an outlet, switch, or panel. Shut off the breaker for that circuit if you can reach the panel safely, then call. Do not wait to see if it goes away.
Sparks or arcing when plugging anything in. Occasional tiny static-like sparks are normal; visible arcing, popping, or a flash is not.
An electrically hot outlet or switch plate. If a plate is too warm to hold your hand on, the connection behind it is failing.
Partial power loss in the home. If half your home is dark but half still works, the problem is likely inside your panel or a main connection — not the utility. This can indicate a failing main breaker or loose service conductor.
Water contact with any electrical component. After a leak, flood, or roof damage, never reset a GFCI or breaker that got wet until it's been evaluated.
Exposed or damaged wiring. Storm damage, rodents, or renovations that cut into walls can leave live conductors exposed.
Can Wait Until a Scheduled Visit
- A single dead outlet with no heat, noise, or burning smell
- Flickering that only happens with one fixture and stops when you wiggle the switch (still get it fixed — but not tonight)
- Adding new outlets, lighting, or a ceiling fan
- Upgrading fixtures or installing surge protection
Why Emergency Calls Cost More — and Why They're Worth It
After-hours response carries a premium, but an arcing connection behind a wall doesn't clock out at 5 PM. The cost of an emergency visit is a fraction of fire damage, and licensed electricians carry the testing equipment to find the true fault rather than the symptom.
What to Do While You Wait
- Shut off the affected breaker if the panel is accessible and labeled.
- Unplug anything on the affected circuit.
- Don't reset tripped breakers repeatedly — one reset attempt, then stop.
